The List of Dimasa Kachari Kings and Rulers - Kachari kingdom

Dimasa kingdom (known as Kachari kingdom) was a powerful kingdom in medieval Assam that existed from the early 10th century (approximately) to the early 1830 century CE. The rulers of this kingdom were the Dimasa people who belonged to a part of the greater Kachari ethnic group. Remnants of this kingdom survived till the advent of the British Empire in India. The origin of the Kachari kingdom is shrouded in mystery and some believe that they were the descendants of the son of Bhima, Ghatotkacha. According to the legends, Kachari also took part in the Mahabharata war. Dimasa Kachari had left the Kamarupa kingdom in ancient times owing to political turmoil. While they were crossing the Brahmaputra River (known as Dilao in Dimasa), a few of their companions were swept away by the flow of the river and later came to be known as Dimasa etymologically translates to Son of the Big River.

In the 18th century, a divine Hindu origin was constructed for the rulers of the Kachari kingdom and it was named Hidimbi, a princess of the Dimasa. The Dimasa princess Hidimbi, wife of the Pandava Bhima and mother of great warrior Ghatotkacha in the Mahabharata.

The Kachari kingdom was extended along the southern bank of the Brahmaputra from the Dikhow River in the east to the Kolong River in the west including the Dhansiri valley during the 13th century. The exact date of establishment of Dimapur capital is not properly known. But according to Kachari tradition, the Muli bamboo flowers once every fifty years, and during the rule of the Kachari king at Dimapur, the said variety of bamboo flowers was nine times. This means that they ruled at Dimapur for 450 years. According to this calculation they had established Dimapur approximately in 1087 AD.
